Suncraft Energy is proud to announce its partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) on the widely acclaimed project to provide sustainable energy access to the rural sector, dubbed as Lighting a Billion Lives (LaBL), which has drawn a significant amount of public attention.
“Millions and millions of people do not see light after the sun goes down. Lighting a Billion Lives is in response to this unfortunate state of affairs in the 21st century. The initiative makes it possible for people to get clean, healthy, and adequate light in their homes without any pollution or emission and at a cost that is entirely affordable.”
— Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI
LaBL is based on an entrepreneurial model of energy service delivery which seeks to provide high-quality and cost effective solar lamps, disseminated through micro solar enterprises set-up in un-electrified or poorly electrified villages. These enterprises are operated and managed by a local entrepreneur trained under the initiative, who rents the solar lamps every evening, for an affordable fee to the rural populace. Financing models include a Fee for service model (where the user pays only a nominal daily rent. Capital costs are supported by grant to a large extent) and a Loan finance model (where operators take up solar enterprises as their own enterprise by facilitating loans and subsidizing partial cost of the enterprise through TERI and/or the partner organizations including government agencies).
TERI has embarked on the 1st phase of the project with 100 mini-grid solar power plants @ 1 kWp each. Currently, only 41 of these plants are being constructed, a substantial number of these has been awarded to SunCraft Energy, to be constructed in the states of Meghalaya and Orissa. SunCraft received additional orders a few weeks later. In addition to executing these projects, SunCraft Energy is also manufacturing solar inverters that will be integrated within these power plants.
We are proud to become project execution partners of TERI and part of such a high profile national project.
